Emma Hannigan’s Legacy Lives On

Family of Campaigner Continue to Support Breast Cancer Ireland

The family of the late author and campaigner, Emma Hannigan wishes to continue her legacy of raising funds to support the research efforts of Breast Cancer Ireland as her final novel The Gift of Friends, written in the months before she died on March 3rd, 2018, goes on sale this week.  Emma, an ambassador for Breast Cancer Ireland, raised over €135k in the weeks before she died, through her Text CURE campaign and at the anniversary of her passing, her father, Philip Hannigan is calling on the public to continue their support of the charity which was close to her heart.

Last year, Breast Cancer Ireland eponymously named a new fellowship in Emma’s honour and the inaugural Emma Hannigan Research Fellowship was awarded to post-doctoral fellow, Dr Damir Vareslija.  Based at the Breast Cancer Ireland Research Centre at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Dr Vareslija is investigating metastatic disease to the brain that is secondary to the original primary breast cancer, occurring in 10-30% of patients with advanced disease. Emma visited the labs on several occasions before she died to see for herself the progress being made.

Emma’s family wish to continue her efforts, even at this very difficult time, and her father, Philip Hannigan, says, “Emma was very clear that every effort should be made to support ongoing research into breast cancer so that no other family would have to suffer a loss like this.”

CEO of Breast Cancer Ireland, Aisling Hurley adds, “Our memories of Emma are so vivid. Her final book, Gift of Friends, epitomises who she was, a woman full of life, love and sparkle who held friendships very dear.  Her energy and commitment to research spurs us on every day and we pledge to honour Emma’s legacy, as we continue to raise significant funds to speed up our research discovery times and ultimately affect better treatment outcomes for patients, thereby changing the landscape of this disease into the future.

Breast Cancer Ireland raises significant funding for research into breast cancer as well as promoting education and awareness on the importance of breast health amongst women of all ages.  To make a €4.00 donation text CURE to 50300 or go to www.breastcancerireland.com
